Why did you start Kristen’s Custom Creations?
What started as a hobby turned into a business. After I had my son I searched for a mommy necklace and just couldn’t find anything I liked. After much research I created my “Proud Mama” necklace and then started receiving so many requests from friends and family that I decided to open up my shop www.klacustomcreations.etsy.com I always made jewelry as a hobby, but never imagined I would open up a shop. I spent 11 years working in the service industry and always thought I would return to my field after spending a few years home with my son.
What is your favorite part of owning your own business?
Having a creative outlet that allows me to stay home with my son. It isn’t always easy but I feel lucky to be home with him. When he wants to play, we play. I really try to work around him so he gets the attention he needs.
What inspires you?
The everyday happenings with my friends and family. I am inspired by just about everything around me. I love being able to convey a message through my jewelry. I really want my jewelry to hold special meaning for my customers.
Who is your best cheerleader?
My husband and my mom. I receive tremendous support and couldn’t do it without them.
What would be your #1 piece of advice that you would give to any mom just starting out or wanting to start a business?
Find something you love to do and the rest will follow. Owing your own business always seems easier until you actually do it.
How do you keep your kids occupied when you are working?
I have found that I have to be flexible as to when I work. I sometimes pop in a video and at times set my son up across from me while I am working and give him his playdough. I tell him that he needs to do his work also. It is really cute he tells me “Mama I am working too.”
What do you never leave the house without?
My cell phone.
Do you have a favorite quote?
“Love the life you live.”
In addition to great jewelry, Kristen loves to give back. Each month she features a charity and a portion of her proceeds that month go to help others in that organization. For the month of August, Kristen’s feature charity is The Special Olympics of Michigan. From Kristen…
“This organization is near and dear to me, my cousin Andrew has been a participant with the Special Olympics of Michigan for many years and has won his share of medals! Andrew is now 21 years old and is a very special young man. You always see a smile on his face (ear to ear) and anyone that knows him, knows that he loves Sponge Bob, and I mean really loves it! We love and adore Andrew!”
For each of Kristen’s “Shine” necklaces sold, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Michigan Special Olympics.
