Talking Story Tuesday with Amy Long of Secure2Me

With Fall upon us, it’s time to start bundling up the little ones. And what better way than with the Secure2Me blanket. This fabulous invention is a blanket that attaches to your stroller, car seat, even to you while breastfeeding, with baby-safe clips.  It helps keep the blanket on  your baby and not on the ground.  While Secure2Me is keeping our babies covered, Ohana Mama is unveiling a little bit about owner and mom entrepreneur, Amy Long, in today’s Talking Story Tuesday…

Name: Amy Long

Name of Your Business: Secure2Me Blankets

When did you start your business? December 2006

What is your favorite part of owning your own business?

I love the opportunity to teach my children in a hands-on, practical way about things like economics and ethics. They are little, but I know they are absorbing key lessons on how to treat people and how to make important decisions.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the responses from moms who use and love my blankets. For me, it really is all about creating a truly useful product that makes other mom’s time with baby more enjoyable.

Who is your biggest cheerleader?

Kevin, my husband, is such a believer in me and my company. He has made so many sacrifices to support me during the start-up process. Without Kevin’s encouragement, talents and wisdom, I would not be in business today.

What would be your #1 piece of advice you would give to any mom just starting out or wanting to start a business?

To be successful in any business you must differentiate yourself from the competition. Ideally, you should offer something that people can only get from you. It is not enough to be passionate about a product or service. You must do extensive research and pursue the business only if a real, untapped market exists.

How do you keep your kids occupied when you are working?

It changes almost weekly as the boys grow! We have at least one outing a day so the children have something special to look forward to each day. My 8 year old loves to “work” next to me on Zoo Tycoon, the 2 year old is really into Thomas the Tank engine right now so he plays for a good while with his tracks and choochoos and the 4 year old has recently discovered a love for drawing so a thick stack of paper and four markers entertain him for a long time.

What do you never leave the house without?

My BlackBerry
