Why did you start your business?Primarily to be with my newborn son. One look at him, and my husband and I knew that we needed to find a way for me to be home with him. Before I had Nicholas, I used to tell myself that I had the know-how to create a successful business, and that someday I would do it. Nick was the nudge that I needed!
What is your favorite part of owning your own business?
Flexibility. Although I don’t have as much flexibility as I thought I would, I have it when it counts, like when my son is sick or when I need to tend to something important. It’s those times when I’m glad I can make the decision to take time off—without guilt!
What inspires you?I have always pushed myself to accomplish what I set out to do, and
although I am my own worse critic, I also know how to give myself that extra push I need to get through a rough time. Looking at my son’s beautiful face certainly helps!
Who is your biggest cheerleader?I am very fortunate to say that I have more than one. My husband isn’t very involved with the day-to-day happenings in my business, but he constantly tells me that he knows I can make this business successful—and he truly means it! My parents, my mother-in-law, and my friends have always cheered for me during the successful times, and the difficult ones.
What would be your #1 piece of advice that you would give to any mom just starting out or wanting to start a business?Plan! It’s easy to think that you’ve got a great idea, and that that is all you need to create a successful business. Unfortunately, you need much more, in your business and in your personal life. Be sure to do your research and have a business plan in place that will take you through the first three years (at least) and refer to it often! This is the “road map” for driving your company to its final destination. On the home front, it is much harder than you may think to juggle work, children, and home simultaneously, so make sure you have a momtourage to support you in every possible way. I think it’s the only way to keep your sanity!
How do you keep your kids occupied when you are working?I try to schedule time for activities and play in between projects throughout his awake time, and try to do the bulk of my work while he naps and after I put him down at night. I am also very lucky to have my mother-in-law to watch my son twice a week so that I can meet with clients and attend networking functions, which are a big part of growing my business.
What do you never leave the house without?Hotwheels! Well, that’s when my son is with me. ☺ I keep a notebook in my purse for meeting notes, grocery lists and to-do items. I also make sure to have my Blackberry so that my team and clients can reach me, and so that I can access my schedule.
Do you have a favorite quote? Yes, it’s by Martin LutherKing, Jr.: “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” I have this on my vision board as a reminder that I cannot predict the future, nor can I control what is going to happen. All I can do is continue to make the decisions that are right for my business, my family, and me, and let the universe take care of the rest!
