Now let’s talk story with the woman behind Hippos Toes Boutique and the Hippos Toes Blog …
Hippos Toes

Aloha Carole! Congratulations on launching Hippos Toes this week!  Tell us how you got the idea to start this boutique.

My husband and I visited South Africa a couple of years ago and I came across the Bug Zoo clothing line there. I feel in love with the clothing because it was so unique and unlike anything I had seen before. Since then I have found out the Bug Zoo is fair trade clothing, and that the women that make the clothing are living in disadvantaged areas on South Africa. They have very limited income opportunities in their country and they are mom’s like us, trying their best to support their families. Well that became very important to me – I wanted to help them improve their lives. The fact that the clothing is well made, fun and unique, was also an important selling point. I felt if I liked them so much then other’s would like them just as much as me, so I developed my eboutique, Hippos Toes to feature their adorable clothing.

With your clothes coming from South Africa, do you travel there frequently?

Not as much as I would like. I fell in love with the country, it is very beautiful, but it’s 24 hours away by plane. So I don’t get back there as much as I’d like.

Who is your biggest cheerleader?

My biggest cheerleader is definitely my husband. He gives me my much needed support and encouragement. He is behind me every step of the way.

How do you occupy your little one while working?

Boy, that’s a tough question. He is getting better about playing by himself for 30 minutes or so at a time, so he plays in the same room with me and I just make sure that I take a lot of breaks during the day to play outside or read him a story, and of course lots of snuggles and hugs. He’s the main reason that I work from home, so I can be with him as much as possible.

What sites do you use for networking?

Mom Bloggers Club, Mompreneur, Mommy Millionaire, Posh mama are some of my favorites

Do you have a mentor?
I don’t really have a specific mentor. I just try to learn as much as I can from everyone that I come into contact with – about business, about being a mommy, about being a friend :)

Do you have a favorite quote?

“Do not go gentle into the good night, rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

To me that means to do everything and anything that you desire to do because life is so short. Enjoy every second :)

What are your favorite pieces from your new collection?

My favorite pieces are the Warrior Bug shirts for boys – I love the way they look on my son. I also like the golf shirts for boys. For the girls, I love the corduroy skirt and the mesh top. I think they look great together.

Mahalo for taking the time to talk story Carole!
