I love talking story with mom entrepreneurs and today is no different…today we’re chatting with Tori Tait. She’s one of the women behind Good Thoughts Paper Co ., home to the fabulous Bow Pad , and the “Hostess” behind Thoughtfully Simple , a new e-zine all about “entertaining, household tips, organizing ideas and style.” Without further adieu…I bring you Hostess Tori Tait…
I love your bow pads on Good Thoughts Paper Co. How did you get started?
I am so glad you love our Bow Pads! The idea to create these trendy note pads actually happened out of necessity. My Sister-in-law and I were hosting a baby shower together, and when it came time to choose which favors we would give each guest, we could not find anything unique and impressive enough. We came up with the idea to create small note pads (personalized with each guest’s name) and tie the top with an over sized polka dotted ribbon. All the guests began raving about them and asking us to create Bow Pads for their friends and family. Not long after that, Good Thoughts Paper Co. was born and we have been getting paper cuts ever since!
Customers get to pick their paper and bow, right? What’s your favorite combination?
That is a tough one! I love discovering new combinations of paper and ribbon. Sometimes a customer will order something like yellow paper with hot pink & white polka dot ribbon, and I will think “that won’t look good.” Then I create it and it is my new favorite combo!
How do you balance your business and family life?
I am fortunate enough to be able to work out of my home. Even though some days I am able to get less done than if I was away at a studio, I am grateful that I have the option to squeeze in time to play tea party with my girls if I want. I do most of my phone calls during nap time and a lot of computer work when they are tucked into bed at night, like so many mom-entrepreneurs do.
You also have a e-zine, Thoughtfully Simple, could you tell us a little more about that?
I have been wanting to create an e-zine for so long now. I am thrilled to have just launched Thoughtfully Simple. Anyone who knows me, will tell you that entertaining, event planning, and creating fabulous gifts are my passion. I often hear “How do you come up with that?” or, “I’m just not good at that stuff.” I love coming up with creative ideas and want to share them with everyone who needs a little inspiration. I want to be able to inspire my readers to give-it-a-go and plan that fabulous event, or simple family night. So many people get overwhelmed and don’t know where to begin when planning a get together or trying to come up with creative ideas. I hope Thoughtfully Simple will be a place many will come to for a little inspiration and peak at all things I love.
“Pledge to Buy Mom Made” – I love this idea on your e-zine. Tell us a bit more about it.
I came up with the idea to create a “Pledge” that will connect moms looking for gifts to purchase, with mom-owned businesses who are trying to increase sales this holiday season. So many families are spending less this season, yet the reality is that most of us will still purchase a fair amount of gifts. I have personally decided to purchase as many gifts as I can from small mom-owned businesses in hopes that my purchase will help another family like mine. Women are so great and helping one another out- I am hoping this pledge will catch on. Readers can go to thoughtfullysimple.com and leave a comment listing their favorite mom-owned online store (or even a link to their own store). I have also created a button that others can place on their blog to help spread the word.
What is one thing you never leave home without?
I never leave home without a small notebook. Ideas and inspiration come to me at the weirdest places like school pick up, or the grocery store. I always want to write it down before I forget about it!
Are you on Twitter? What’s your twitter name?
I am on Twitter, and have found so many other great people to follow! My user name is Hostess_Tori and am always looking for new people to connect with!
Have a favorite quote you’d like to share with Ohana Mama?
I really relate to this quote by Albert Einstein, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” My e-zine is called Thoughtfully Simple- and I am a firm believer that things can be simple and still be thoughtful. This quote seems to echo my mantra very well.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I am so thrilled to have had a chance to share a bit of my story with Ohana Mama readers. I would love to invite everyone to stop by Thoughtfully Simple and let me know what you think! Also, if anyone is looking to order unique personalized stationery, I would love to offer everyone 20% off their order with code “Ohana” at Good Thoughts Paper Co .
