Talking Story Tuesday with Karen Bullard of Karen Cole Designs

Today we’re Talking Story with Mom, artist and business woman, Karen Bullard, the creator and illustrator behind Karen Cole Designs stationary. These finds are light, bright, whimsical and something to talk about…

I love the freshness of your stationary designs! How did you get started in stationary and Karen Cole Designs?

I’ve always loved paper and making invitations, even as a kid I made birthday party invites. My background is in interior design and art. After having children, I stopped working to focus on my family and as they got older I realized that I needed to be creative again to maintain my sanity and stationery was a natural thing to do. I started Karen Cole Paper in 2004 when I realized that there was a void in the market for clean, bold colors and designs on invitations, announcements and notes. I made most of my children’s birthday invitations because what was in the marketplace were too busy or commercial.

Do you draw all of your designs yourself?

I have illustrated all of the designs myself. I have just begun a collaboration with another artist to illustrate some designs for me.

Where do you get the inspiration for all of your designs?

I love vintage fabric, children’s books, bold color, nature. I get inspiration from lots of places!

What are your favorites from your collection?

My favorite is the funky buggy b/c my daughter helped me design that one when she was about 5 yrs. old. It was her idea, and she reminds me, to put the heart in the wheel of the buggy.

How do you manage family life and growing a business?

My family always will come first and the time I have left over, I’ll work on my business. It’s my other baby, in a sense but my children will be young for a short time and I don’t want to miss a thing. So I’m involved in their classrooms as much as I’m allowed. haha!

Who is your biggest cheerleader?

I have a good friend, Lisa, who is always so positive and will look at new designs to give me her honest opinion. She even went to the Licensing Show with me and stood in a 10 x 10 booth for 4 days with me. That’s a friend!
What items do you never leave home without?
My cell phone…..that’s about it.

Do you have a favorite quote?
If at first you don’t succeed, do it like your mother told you.—Author Unknown.
Do you have a blog or can we catch your tweets on Twitter?
