Good-bye sleepy dust

Contrary to many beliefs, in Hawaii we work (many or most have TWO jobs to afford this paradise), we have obligations, and yes, we even get sucked into Internet-land and stuck in our house like little rats stuck on a glue trap (ewwww! and ouch!) and we soon find we really could be anywhere, doing whatever we are doing.

But today we got out and took a drive “to town” to do some shoe shopping for the kids, and I suddenly remembered just where I was. I suddenly stopped with the iPhone (the batteries died, I won’t lie) and I looked around.  I was shocked (just as much as I was the very first time I landed on Maui knowing that I would live here from now on) at how absolutely gorgeous this place is where I live now.

It’s freaking AMAZING here!

Who knew! haha

I looked around and took in the cows grazing in a huge open grassy area on one side of me.  And the blowing fields of sugar cane on my other side. With the gorgeous blue ocean in front of me (and behind me) and Molokini off to my left, I just smiled.

Driving on our four lane “highway” watching the gorgeous clouds open up over Kula up on the side of the Haleakala volcano, I thought…”We live here?!”

Holy cow!

(no pun intended)

Taking a drive with the kids on Maui is like turning on the cold water in your bathroom sink and splashing it on your face.  It wakes you up.  Refreshes you and gets all that stagnant-Internet-work-sleepy-dust out of your eyes…

ahhh, I needed that!

  1. You are so lucky to live in Maui. I visited (OMG) 15 years ago and have wanted to move there every since. Instead I moved to Montana. So not the same thing but beautiful. (I’d still move to Maui in a heartbeat.)

It is so easy to forget to appreciate the beauty around us.

  2. Well Sarah I’ve never been to Hawaii (hope to some day) and it sounds gorgeous! I live near the Great Smoky Mountains and it is so beautiful, yet I sometimes forget this. We are going to be leaving Monday for two nights in a rustic cabin, with no phones, TV and dare I say it, no internet access. I do believe it will be tough at first but I think it will be really good for me to connect with nature – heck, to connect with myself again.

After all it’s just for 2 nights… how tough could that be. :-)

  3. You really made me think about how we adjust to our circumstances so easily, no matter how amazing they were at first. Being accepted to my dream college, marrying my best friend, having a baby – all of those things blew me away in the beginning, but the novelty wore off and they became simply part of my life. It’s nice to actually stop and realize that my life is every bit as fabulous and breathtaking as I could hope for – although, of course, it’s not Hawaii! I second @Laura – post pictures!!

  4. Love this post. :) I feel the same about where I live in the Appalachian Mountains. Even a trip to Walmart is beautiful – pass by green pastures, majestic mountains and over rivers and creeks… oh, just today we saw a mama turkey and her babies on the side of the road. So cute…

That’s so cool Karen! Yes..this is on our drive to Walmart…it’s about 40 minutes from us. Who knew I’d find country when I moved to Maui! Love it!! Would love to visit where you are too! Sounds beautiful!

  5. It is so true, in this day and age. We all need to unplug ourselves from the Matrix (ha!) and get out and enjoy the day. It’s just so easy to get sucked in!
