What did you do with your wedding dress? (and mine still fits! woo!)

I was inspired by Trisha over at Momdot and put on my wedding dress yesterday for the first time since I got married almost 7 years ago.  And after two babies, it still fits! Woo!

My wedding dress has been sitting in my closet for the past seven years and has endured an ant raid…seriously, I once had ants tromping through the box the dry cleaner had put my dress in after my wedding. Since then it’s been in a bag.  It made the move to Hawaii and there in the back of my closet it hangs.

I had visions of perhaps cutting it up for my daughter’s baptism dress or making a pillow or blanket for her. Or the thought of maybe her wearing it for her own wedding had crossed my mind, but really, I bet she’ll want her own – wasn’t dress shopping so much fun?! I loved it and found my dress on the first day shopping with my mom.  It was special.

So what do to with this dress??  Have you heard of Trash The Dress?  It’s where you take pictures of you in your wedding dress out in the elements or doing something that you normally wouldn’t do in a wedding dress…like ride a horse or tractor or swim in it.  I don’t know, it sounds kinda fun! (my parents, who are most-likely reading this, and paid for my dre$$, are probably having a heart attack right now…don’t worry guys it’s just a thought…but it sure would be fun!)

So, what did you do with your Bridal Collection?  Is it sitting in your closet? Did you turn it into something else? Inspire me!

If you’ve posted about your wedding dress, share! I want to see! Or go and do it NOW! This should be fun! Oh, and also you can fine some nice dresses at Katherine’s Bridal Boutique!

  1. Sarah, thanks so much for sharing this with me on Twitter the other day. I actually posted a couple of pics of myself in my wedding dress on my blog today too. Thanks for the inspiration! :)

  2. I think a trash the dress session is a great idea!!! Most of the things you do in a trash the dress session won’t even completely ruin the dress.

  3. Preparing to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary on August 30th, 2009 and I also still have my wedding gown, custom made for me with long French lace Mantilla veil and train that my mother so lovingly sat up late nights hand sewing for me. It was ivory originally and very Victorian in design. Ironically I just happened to check on it tucked inside a blue dry cleaners bag, inside another beige one all put lovingly inside a big wedding gown garment bag in the back of my closet— it is still in perfect condition and aging in color to a gorgeous light golden just as I had hoped it would back in 1969. Unfortunately, I am not so lucky as you are Sarah, menopause and the years have taken their toll on my body and I am afraid the 89 lbs I weighed on my wedding day is faint remembrance for me. Alas, it will not fit, but perhaps one of my four grandsons’ fiance’s or my only granddaughter may want to use it somehow for their own wedding. It would be very cool to think of it being re-appreciated years from now. Keep that gown – it symbolizes the innocence of pure love!

  4. My wedding dress is in a beautiful box in my attic. I haven’t seen it in years. My 4 year old daughter is dying to see it and one day it will be fun to show it to her.

  5. Mine is cleaned and preserved hoping to wear it out to dinner (hopefully in Mexico) on our 10 yr anniversary. A just because dinner. I probably don’t fit in it right now but I will by then

  6. I have a beautiful wedding dress ,placed it in my cedar chest . When my daughter was about 15 she tried it on and boy did we have a laugh. She was already taller than me and the dress looked like a tea gown on her.
Maybe someday she will have it for the babies christening gown
    You look grogeous!

  7. I had one of those lovely organza wedding dresses in 1977. One of my sons was really into music and drama in high school. I donated the dress and veil to the drama department. They didn’t have a wedding dress in their costume shop and they were thrilled!!

  9. Mine sits in the back of a closet at my mom’s house…in another state. I really need to get that next time I visit. And I’m 100% sure it doesn’t fit anymore…sigh…

But shopping for it sure was fun! I too found mine on the first day of shopping. When I put in on, I just knew it was the one. :)

  10. Mine is in a box. Can’t take it out or it may yellow with age. What will I do with it? No clue. It was gorgeous, but when will I wear it again. Trash it? Unthinkable! I love it too much. A big sentimental box in my closet is where it shall stay.

Hilarious, though, because I was trying on bridesmaid dresses today. Bored much? LMAO. I have three in my closet. One has a stain, but why dryclean it – I will not wear it again. Hmmm…

  11. Mine is actually downstairs at my ILs where I am now… But, I’ve LOST weight since my wedding, so I’m positive it still fits, but how horrible is this? I haven’t even had it cleaned since our wedding… Which will be 4 years ago on Thursday!

  12. I realized it was taking up way too much space and my daughter (if I had one) would probably never wear it. So I create a website to sell it (and it sold, 5 months later).

  13. you are so teeny! my dress is in my daughter’s closet because she LOVES it! I would HOPE that it still fits me because I had my son in March and got married in August so I should be skinnier NOW even at 12 wks preggers LOL we will see…I will have to try it on! {and my anniversary is coming up too so that will be fun}

  14. If my wedding dress still fit I would so use Trisha’s idea of a wedding dress party with all my married girls! That would be too funny!

  15. That’s great!

I have a pic of me wearing mine after 20-25 years and 2 kids and it still fit – I’ll have to find it and post it.

My DD took my mantilla veil which extended past the train on my dress, and had it cut and redesigned shorter and used it as her veil on her wedding day.

  16. Wow, for taking pictures of yourself you sure did a fabulous job! You look gorgeous. Mine looked so unnatural. I suppose that might have something to do with me standing on a chair??? :)

  17. And you were surprised why? LOL I’ll have to look for mine…two things or it fits or it’s a little big ;) considering I was prego when we got married LOL

  18. Mine is at my parents’ house in the closet of my old room. Hmm… now that I think about it, I should bring it back here! Well, I’ve been pretty diligent about working out and eating better this entire summer, so I think I would be able to fit into it.

  19. My wedding dress still hangs in my closet in a bag. We were married in Vegas and it does not look like a typical wedding dress. Its white and sparkly! It has not been out of the bag since I wore it 7 years ago when we got married. I was actually wondering if it would still fit me and if it did I was considering wearing it to the Marine Corp Ball in November… (BTW, I’m in Hawaii too! Just moved here 3 weeks ago)!

  20. OH! Trisha, that reminds me, a friend used her dress to have a princess party with her little girls…how cute is that?! That would be fun! Maybe I’ll keep it to have one of those in the future with Leah.

  21. You guys are too funny! I am sure my wedding dress does NOT fit anymore. I’ll get it out one day!

  22. Mine is in my closet hanging up. I used it for my Halloween costume last year to be Giselle from Enchanted.

My mom still has hers and was going to make it into a blessing dress for my daughter, but ran out of time. Now she’s thinking a baptism dress. We’ll see what happens!

  23. Oh my!
You are adorable!! I love the above photo of you laughing.
My wedding dress from January of 1976 is long gone. (No sadness there!) My wedding dress from September 2000…well…it suddenly got smaller than me and I just recently gave it to a sweet and “tiny” friend. It’s a formal dress but perfect for a night out or even Sunday best.
I do have my DIL’s gorgeous wedding dress hanging in my closet.
    How about that?
I think I’m going to take you up on this and post some photos!!!

  26. Sarah, were you really that surprised? lol You are the tiniest little thing every…how would that dress NOT still fit you? lol You look great btw!

I got married in Mexico and my wedding dress is still in the bag in the suitcase so that nothing would happen to it. I haven’t tried it on since….I don’t think it would still fit but honestly I dont know. I think I was probably 1 or 2 sizes smaller then…ya know..before the 3 kids came! lol ;)
