Kid Basix Safe Sippy 2 and Safe Sporter Review and Giveaway {ends 9/30}

A few weeks back, I was on a quest to find a new sippy for Leah and a new water bottle for Cameron.  I had a few things that I wanted the new goods to have…

1. Be BPA free

2. Easy to clean

3. For Cam’s – no small parts or inserts to clean so when he took it to school no parts went missing

4. For Leah’s – spill-proof or hard to spill, as she likes to take a gulp and then sometimes leave her cup laying sideways wherever she’s left it.

So I went on a search and found Kid Basix.  They made both products – sippies and water bottles for older kids. Woohoo!

I was sent a Safe Sipper 2 for Leah and a Safe Sporter for Cam to review and I’ll be giving TWO away to one lucky Ohana Mama reader!

A little about Kid Basix and their products:

Kid Basix created The Safe Sippy™ drink cup in response to parents’ growing concerns about Bisphenol A and other harmful chemicals present in many plastic bottles. Now, we have expanded the “Safe” brand to include The Safe Starter™ stainless steel baby bottle and The Safe Sporter™ sports bottles to provide safe, reusable drink ware for the entire family.

Why go with stainless steel bottles from Kid Basix when so many BPA-free plastic bottles are available now? We can give you 300 billion reasons. That’s the approximate number of plastic water bottles discarded around the world every year. Enough to power 12 million cars for an entire year. And that’s just the water bottles! It doesn’t include all the plastic bottles used for sodas, sports drinks, fruit juices and the like. All told, the plastic bottles we throw away each year would reach to the moon and back – 1500 times. So using reusable stainless steel bottles makes sense on every level: personal, local and global.

Right away I loved the cool, modern designs of both cups.  Here’s my take after using them for a couple of weeks…

The Safe Sippy 2 for Leah

Leah’s Safe Sipper 2 came in pink….since having her, I have this infatuation with pink (it’s so odd, I was never a pink girl but now I am!) so I loved it as did she and there was no worrying about her brother who is anti pink (“it’s a GIRLS cup! ick!”) grabbing it as his own – yay, one less fight for mama to referee!

What I LOVE about this cup…

1. Its not only a sippy but can turn into a straw cup with the change of an insert.  Yes the Safe Sippy 2 comes with inserts, so you do have parts to clean and keep together but so far so good, nothing has gone lost and I can throw it all in the dishwasher to easily clean (I place all small parts in a container within the dishwasher)

2. It has handles…and they come off! So if Leah wants the handles she’s got ‘em but if she doesn’t well, they slide off when you take off the top part and vuola!

3. It’s made of stainless steel so no leaching of anything into her drink and the drinks don’t stain or stick to the inside, meaning the cup gets clean after each use. As Kid Basix says…”Clean in, Clean out” love it!

What I didn’t like - I did find that the cup is not completely spill-proof but it’s a slow slow dribble so if you catch it in time, no worries.

BUT, it does come with a travel adaptor, you simply replace the straw or sippy plug with the travel one and then you can travel safely or pop it in your purse knowing it won’t leak.

The Safe Sporter for Cameron

Cameron’s came in blue…with no animals or characters on it.  And this is very important to Cam…who told me, after I sent him to school with an Elmo cup one day, “Mom, PLEASE don’t send that cup again.  IT’S FOR BABIES!” {gasp!} Bad Mom! So the coolness of the Safe Sipper was a hit for Cam.

What I love about the Safe Sipper…

1. It has NO INSERTS!  Hellelujah!  Nothing to lose at school or when cleaning.

2. It comes with an attached Mud Cap to keep the pull spout clean.  Great for school….(but see my notes below)

3. The TPR sleeve – I put ice cold water in Cam’s cup most times since it’s hot here year round.  The sleeve keeps his fingers from getting frozen, since the ice does make the stainless steel cold to the touch

4. Since we do ice, I love that it has a large opening for ice cubes to fit easily through.

5. Again, ice cold water makes it sweat and dribble with water, the Safe Sipper actually has a base that acts as a coaster, catching all of that condensation

What I didn’t like:  My son chewed on the spout and it’s torn…I’m trying to find out if it can be replaced.  And the mud cap is awesome but Cam said it flipped back on him when he was drinking so we removed it.

Overall, I love that I know there are no BPAs in their drinking cups and the styles are super cool!

I would want both of them in green. That way I wouldn’t have any fighting. Both boys would have the same color :)

I also like pink for both. I too have a problem with pink on my daughter. I don’t think she owns anything that isn’t pink.
