So far, so good

So things with our new puppy, Duke are so far so good.  My husband may tell you a different story, he’s the poor guy who has been taking nights with our new baby and has the dark circles under his eyes and bad mood to show for it (shhh, don’t tell him I said that).

Duke’s favorite things so far…

Chewies, his stuffed animal (all the kids have one, he wanted one too), sleeping at my feet while I work, hiding under pillows or anything that resembles a cave like a chair, table or under my legs.

He really likes to go outside with me, hang out for what seems like forever, NOT let a drop of pee escape him, and then right when we get inside, WHAMO, letting loose…I am not amused. He seems to pee when outside only if he DOES NOT have his leash on…I’m workin’ on it. And in the meantime, I think my floors may be getting more clean than they have ever been….at least where he has let loose.

So here’s what he’s been up to…told in pictures…gosh sometimes I totally wish I could come back in my next life as a dog…I have to say a dog’s life (when you have loving, caring and catering owners like us) would be oh so good!

He’s adorable! I’m not as brave as you are to integrate a puppy into our home but he is adorable! Makes me want to add a puppy to our home even though we just adopted a rescue :-)

So tiny! And love that puppy fluffy fur!

LOL about the pee in the house. Shar Peis are naturally cat-like and clean. NOT. Ha! That’s what I keep reading. Sookie is so DIRTY – like Pig Pen. I admit though, she got the pee thing down quick, but we had problems with rugs and pee. I guess she thought it was grass-like? A pee-pad? I had to keep throwing rugs in the wash. It’ll get better though! Nights will too! I was so thankful when she was able to get through the night without waking us up. Just like a baby, I swear!

    Awe so cute!!!
I feel ya though last year before Christmas my Scottie had babies (was almost saved up to have her fixed too!!!) She had 8! Yes 8 crazy, wiggly, demanding little puppies I got to care for at least 12 weeks. (The horror, the horror! haha) Cute as they where to have to wake up every morning to a kitchen full of poop and pee was not fun. Not to mention when we all had pneumonia and they thought they where being cute and rolled around in poop and jumped all over each other, yuck.
Needless to say we got her fixed when she was healed after having them!
God speed and good luck to you with your housebreaking and baby raising haha :)

Oh my gosh! He is adorable. I must be out of my mind or my kids have slipped something in my drink, but I have consented to get a dog. ‘Cause I don’t have enough going on with the FGK (five great kiddos) right? We decided on a small dog a Scottie.

Duke is exactly like Marley from Marley & Me (did you ever get to read the book we gave you?) Try the puppy pads in the house and designate a defined area for them (maybe by the door to the outside uncovered deck) next time he has an accident, soak up a little urine on a tissue or paper towel and then dap or dripple a bit onto a puppy pad so he gets the scent on one of the pads and then will be more apt to go there the next time. Watch he doesn’t try to hide under or behind furniture, puppies love the “cave” environment – get a CRATE at the petstore – it will be come his cave/den/haven or privacy – like the womb..he can still see you all and hear you but will be in a smaller more secure feeling setting – his own hideout. Then research method of training called “crate training” – it is the bomb! He also will be a[t to not want to “do business” where he sleeps (inside the crate) so use the crate for sleep/nap/timeout times and then immediately take him to the puppy pads or outside to his designated toilet area first thing everytime you bring him back out from the crate. Otherwise the crate door stays open for him to go back and forth. Remember, puppies are simply infants – and grown dogs, no matter how old, are equal to mentality etc of a 3-5 yr old child – keep that in mind and you will do fine. Be observant, Duke will communicate clearly to you, but he does it by actions – so you have to keep your radar on – much like you need to do with small toddlers. Scold bad behavior and mistakes and then reaffirm the right way repeatedly, and praise and reward good behavior – pats on head or scratch behind ears or under neck – (or occasional training treat). And when he is about 12-14 weeks old start looking for obedience training – for both the dog and mostly for the humans who will need to be trained how to become the pack leader!
Right now, he will pick up that you are the Mommy and GB is the Dad and the kiddies are his siblings – much like when he was born – make sure he knows YOU are the leader! He appears to be a great dog – have patience and be consistent – can NEVER let up! So happy for you and the kiddies – now your house may become a bit more crazy, but it will feel complete!

I again reccomend Cesar Milan’s new book Raising the Perfect dog. He has practical advice for these and other issues, things I wish I had known when we had our last dog. If your local library does digital download lending it is so easy to get these books and put em on an iPod or mp3 player.. that is what I did!
    Looking forward to your success!
