How to Make a Heart Symbol on a Mac

Pssst, want more social media tips? Come and visit me at my Social Media Implementation site, Tadah!

I saw an article on the front page of Yahoo explaining how to add a ♥ to an email, post, tweet, you name it. And they had great answers…if you had a PC.  I do not.  I am an Apple girl and their instructions didn’t work on my Mac so, I did some digging.  And now I’ll share with you how to add that awesome ♥ symbol, just in time for Valentine’s Day!

If you are in a browser and typing, facebooking, or tweeting away, and you feel the urge to say how much you love something the following will get the point across…Let’s use some of my favorite things as an example…

“I {heart} chocolate!” <–notice the brackets, I {heart} these, but they are not needed.

“I also <3 a flowers!” <–when this started creeping up online I had no idea what it meant, I actually thought it was  a sideways bootie with a party hat on. Nope, it’s a heart using the less than symbol “<” and the number 3

And lastly,

“I ♥ pedicures!” <—to add the awesome actual heart symbol on a mac…while in the application, say twitter, post, facebook, just go to EDIT-Special Characters-Miscellaneous and there you will find a real deal ♥!

You can also click on the American Flag in the right corner on your laptop, then click “Show Character Palette” and insert your ♥!

Update! If on Facebook, add a heart symbol super easy…just type < and 3 together like this <3 and Facebook will turn into a heart symbol once you submit the comment or post.

Have fun!

(and yes this post was a small cryptic message to my hubby…babe, grab me some chocolate, flowers and a pedicure for Valentine’s Day and I’ll love ya forever!)

  1. I ❤ YOU for sharing this! I actually went to search for it and found that you had done this post! ❤❤❤❤ :) – Anne

  2. what about the fat hearts?

  3. Thanks for the tips! But one question… I do not see the “american flag” in the right corner of my iMac. Am I missing something or was that specific to a certain operating system?

  4. I have Facebook and I want to know where’s “Edit”? I am on an iMac.

    • Hi Donna, you can’t edit your own post once it’s made on Facebook. However you can edit a comment. To do that, simply over over your comment and a pencil will pop up. Click on that and you can edit your comment.

I’m hoping Facebook allows for editing an update soon!

  5. Is it possible to make the text pink like yours for facebook? Also – I can’t insert pink hearts on my iMac from special characters that are pink. It won’t let me insert any color into the text except black. Any ideas?

    • I think that’s a facebook issue. They dont allow you change colors. BUT, on Facebook to add a heart simply type “<" and a "3" like so .... <3 and it will turn into into a heart photo! Hope that helps!

  6. Awesome Sarah, I googled this and found your site :) Thanks!

  7. Thanx its awesomme♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
