Da Beach + Shave Ice= Hawaiian Bliss

Even in Hawaii people have to work.  It’s a damn shame, a cruel joke, but it’s a necessity. A very very big necessity.  It’s expensive to live here.  Most work hard, sometimes two or more jobs, but all play harder.  And what a wonderful playground Hawaii is to play.  To decompress, you take a swim in the ocean, hop on a surf board, go for a hike, grab a shave ice.

And that’s what we did today.  After a day filled with working on the computer we headed to the Honoapiilani Beach Park for a walk with the pup and the kids.  And then we cooled off with a yummy shave ice from Hawaiian Village Coffee.  I know, a coffee joint for shave ice?  YES!  There’s no shortage of shave ice places in Hawaii and most are good. But we love Hawaiian Village Coffee because on Sundays you can get buy one get one, it’s usually not crowded (Locals hang out and meet there but it’s not touristy).  It’s easy to get to, right off the main highway, oh and they have a bathroom on premises for customers. {bonus!} They also sell cool Hawaiian goods, including, coffee, kitchen gadgets and local tees.

Wow, that looks like so much fun. Although it’s warm here in Vancouver it’s nowhere near THAT warm!! Enjoy it :)

I think I just got frostbite thinking about that shaved ice. LOL It’s like 20 degrees here. But gosh that looks good. We have a little place here called “Hawaiian Ice” and I always love getting a 1/2 green apple 1/2 red apple. soooo good!

Brings back memories of second trip to Maui years ago – when my dream was to open a Hawaiian shaved ice shop in Niguel- “The Ice House” bringing back times pre refrigeration; but alas it didn’t happen right away and shortly thereafter the term of “ice house” sadly took on a negative connotation. Favorite flavors were coconut (Pina Colada) and cherry.

sounds like it was the Perfect day!

My favorite shave ice flavor is li hing mui! But not all li hing mui flavors are created equal – I like some better than others.

That is HUGE! In Puerto Rico someone would drive around with a huge ice block in the back of the truck and shave off ice for .25 if you came running out of your house in time. LOL.
