Surviving Summer

So, how’s Summer going?

Here? Well, plain and simple…Summer is kicking my ass. Sorry for the language but booty, butt, derriere, keester…whatever you call it, none of those words do justice for what Summer is doing to me. So ass is it. Forgive me.

I think I know why the ass kicking began…I lost a mommy’s best friend, ROUTINE. Have you seen him? He seems to have gotten lost on our way home after that last school bell rang.

I imagine quite a few moms are feeling this way. Work at home moms, stay home moms, moms that work outside the home…come on you can share…Summer is kicking your ass, right?

The kids are BOTH home…at the same time. This is key in our house. One kid home full time? That’s doable. But TWO kids, two SIBLINGS, home full time…well, that’s insanity!

Sure we are having loads of fun. Camping at home. Hitting the beach. Hitting the sights. Making forts out of sheets or houses out boxes. We’ve seen two movies, done golf camp. Play dates, park jaunts. We’ve bought out the store in Legos. And Barnes & Noble is fast becoming our home away from home. We’re busy, active, having fun.

But, working from home and having two kids at home, is tough. I find that I have to work at getting to the place where I can finally relax and have fun & focus on my kids when it’s “focus on the kids” time. It takes a real conscious effort to forget about the iphone, the email, the ongoing list of things I want to accomplish that day. It takes me a little transition time to go from working mom to just mom. Then of course there’s house wife mom that creeps up and keeps reminding me that I should be doing laundry, cleaning the bathroom or getting rid of the dog dust bunnies that are taking over.

This all makes for a Summer that is kicking my ass.

Not one to let someone (even Summer) bully me, I am fighting back however, and am trying to balance it all. So I’ve come up with three tips that are helping me gain control (and some of the sanity that’s fallen out of my castle making bucket…)

  • Turn your routine upside down. Just do it. Think like you are making a sand castle and turn the routine bucket on it’s head. Either work early in the morning or work late at night. Play during the day, work at night. Make this your motto.
  • Tag team it. I’m extremely lucky that my husband has a job with flexibility. This means we can do what I like to call, “Tag team parenting.” I work, he takes the kids. He works, I take the kids. We flip flop during the day.
  • Know it will end. Summer isn’t forever. So I’m reminding myself day in and day out, especially when I’m losing my mind, that it will end. So I need to take it all in now. Summer is a time to lose your sanity, have fun, make memories…so love it while it’s here.

So, how’s Summer going for you? Are you running crazy like me, trying to do it all? Betcha are. Got any tips? Stories? Leave a comment below!

  2. Just starting to get the info up ;-) It’s gonna be a very easy “Getting-It-Done” style program – less talk, more action. If you are up for it, then I’d love to have you! Details will be announced soon.

  3. Fantastic! Thanks Melody! I’ll be sure to check your program out!

  4. Hey Sarah!

I have a different schedule for every season! Gotta tweak it where needed, ya know?

And, yes, I’ve got a tip that I personally recommend.
When school starts take the 1st full week off work to regroup, practice getting back into the swing of things, and enjoying time to yourself. I do it every year and if you can swing it, plus truly take it easy, then it’s AWESOME.

Another tip… join me for Get It Done Days! (1/2 day per week for several weeks) I’ll be hosting them between the Labor Day & Thanksgiving holidays. Oh yes, this is all about rotating around your home and whipping it into shape…one cabinet, closet, piece of paper at a time ;-)

  5. Hey mama, I feel your pain…Got 3 boy-kids at home..Turning the place upside down…None of them are interested in camp either.
    I’ve got the 4am work-jam-thing going…but i’m soooo tired at night!

  6. I just had to redo my schedule. It’s summer time. I know less people are online because their world’s are upside down too. And I keep thinking that is a small period in our lives – one I am going to enjoy. I won’t remember e-mails 10 years from now, I but I will remember building LEGOs and crazy days at the park.

Enjoy your world upside down! Ours is too. :)

  9. Aloha Miranda! I have weird children who do not want to do camp! (yes, call them crazy! I did :) )

I did put my son in camp for a day and he quickly said it was fun but that he WOULD NOT be going back. Oh well, we tried! ;)

  10. Why not try to enroll the kids for a summer camp? It’ll be fun for them and relief for you. :) Hope that’ll help. I don’t have a kid yet , that’s why I thought the idea would be beneficial for you and your kids. Just suggesting out.

As for work, hubby and I trade off… I work when he’s home, he works when I’m home… (we both work outside of the home).
