The Avocado Story

Yesterday I opened an avocado and it was perfect. If you love avocados, you’ll understand that this is right up there with Christmas morning. It’s a major win.

So I took the pit out as I usually do, and like so many times before I thought to myself, “I should plant this seed to grow my own avocado tree. This pit would make perfect little avocados that I could pluck right from my yard.” {enter dream sequence of me diving into a big bowl of perfect avocados…}

Now, I’ve said this nearly every time that I’ve opened an avocado. But alas, the pit would go in the trash, or maybe it’d hang around for a couple of days because I was *going* to get to it, but in the end, into the trash that pit went, along with my avocado tree dreams.

But not today! I googled, “how to start an avocado tree” and I went through the instructions…

I washed the pit.
I dried the pit.
I placed toothpicks around it, filled up a glass with water and placed the bottom of the pit in the water with pointy side up, as instructed, and I placed it on our kitchen window shelf.

I was stoked. “YES!” I thought, “I’m going to have my own avocado tree!” Bring it on.
Now, I knew that it would take a while of course, but I wasn’t prepared for the last sentence in the online instructions…

“Now just sit back and get ready to guac ‘n’ roll! It can take anywhere from 5 – 13 years for an avocado plant to bear fruit.”

5-13 years?! I was kicking myself.

We’ve lived in our house for 10 years. If I had gone through this process one of the MANY times I had *thought* about planting that pit, by now we could have a tree full of tasty avocados…and a whole lotta guacamole.
The moral of the story is to STOP thinking about something and start doing! Don’t let, {whatever your avocado tree is}, wait!
