About Carley…

“I’m mom to two of the coolest kids I know and a rambunctious puppy. I have a wonderful, tolerant husband who is my best friend and a darn good pancake flipper. We all live in the sunny suburbs of Los Angeles. Did I say sunny? I meant sweltering.

I’m also a life and career coach obsessed with empowering moms to find careers they love, create systems to simplify their lives, prioritize what’s important and get a HEAP more done in a day. I eat, sleep and dream this stuff. Mostly happy dreams, except for one recurring nightmare about a pile of laundry that chased me down the street while my neighbors looked on with disapproval. (True story.)

Mothercraft was born out of the chaos that ensued when I left my hip and lucrative dot-com career and became a “Homie” (that’s Mothercraft-speak for stay-at-home mom). Life looked peachy from the outside, lots of picnics at the park and board book marathons. How I felt on the inside was another story altogether. I was suffering from what I can only describe as a full-blown identity crisis. I had traded my job with all its perks, notoriety, travel and fabulous income (friendships, social status… I could go on) for sweatpants, diapers and Blues Clues. Many of my friends swiftly returned to work, and though I knew they were struggling with their own emotional tug-of-war, I envied their life away from domesticity and I longed to use my skills and talents. I adored being home with my son, but I often found myself looking in the mirror and thinking, Who the heck is this puffy-eyed woman? And what has she done with the old me?

In the years that followed, I put myself back together like a giant puzzle. And I can help you do it too. It’s time to create a NEW vision of your motherhood, one that honors and respects ALL PARTS of you, not just the ones that you think belong to a “perfect mother” (News flash– there’s no such thing).”

Join us tomorrow and chat with Carley LIVE on Momtv!!  See you there!

Meet the woman behind Go Natural Baby, one of my #blogher sponsors

Let’s learn a bit more about Justyn….

Describe your product(s) In our line of certified organic cotton childrens wear, zah organics™, one of my fave’s is our signature kimono set. I love helping new parents get the best organic bedding, cribs, and clothes for their baby. It is fun to hear their excitement!

Justyn of Go Natural BabyYou are a woman entrepreneur…how did you get started, what made you take the plunge and go into biz on your own? I was inspired by my son’s birth to start my own business so that I could stay home with him while he was growing up- he is the inspiration for pretty much everything I do. It was also important to me to have the best products that I could manufacture because I wanted to do the least amount of harm to the earth and its people. My garments are certified organic from seed through the last stage of manufacturing. I also use a certified fair labor factory because  how the people who make the garments are treated is a priority in my business.

What would be your number 1 piece of advice to other women looking to start a business of their own? Hmm, great question. I think it depends on the kind of business someone wants to start. My two best pieces of advice would be do your homework (research the kind of business you want to start and make sure you understand what it will take to make it happen) and do something that you love!

Do you have kids? I have one seven year old boy- who is the light of my life!

If so, how do you balance working for yourself and family?
This has been a struggle for me as I am and have been a single parent.  My son is my priority so I work around his schedule for the most part and this will lead to working 6+ days a week and very late hours. This year I am trying not work weekends.

Let’s have fun…

What’s your favorite quote? “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Mary Oliver
What is one place you dream of traveling to? Alaska to see the glaciers.
What is one thing you never leave home without? My sunglasses (ironic since I live in Portland).

Let’s get crazy…
What is one daring thing you’d add to your bucket list?  (ie sky diving,  scuba diving, getting a tattoo etc etc)  Maybe you’ve already done it! Share!

I have done a lot of things that I have wanted to in my life and I feel so grateful for that. I would also  like to scuba dive with sharks.

Let’s get smart…
What are you reading right now?
Living Universe by Duane Elgin
What is your fave book of all time?
I don’t have one! Here are a few: Edward Albee Plays, Pride and Prejudice, Who Dies?:An Investigation of Conscious Living and Conscious Dying, The Essential Rumi.

Are you traveling soon? (hello?! #blogher ladies!) This is a MUST DO!

Ok, I don’t want to put a damper on all of our planning fun for Blogher 09…yes, shopping for cute shoes and pretty dresses is fantastic fun, I’ll admit.  But there’s just a little something that you should do before head off to Blogher (aren’t you so excited?!  Me too!)

It only takes 10 minutes at the most.  What is it?  No, it’s not a waxing of your upper lip or eyebrows.  It’s not a do it yourself hair color or downloading must have music for that car trip to Chicago.

No, it’s creating a legal doc that tells the world exactly what should happen to your kids if something should, god forbid, happen to you!

This isn’t just for when you are traveling, but when a vacation or travel comes up, it’s a reminder to get your shit stuff in order.

This program, is so super easy and created by one of my Blogher sponsors, Alexis Martin Neely, a wonderful California attorney and mom-entrepreneur!  Here’ a bit more about this…read up then go make your own….NOW!

Kids Protection Plan
You know what your mama always told you…be sure to wear clean underwear!  In other words, be prepared!  And nothing is more true or more important than being prepared should something happen to you and/or your spouse.  You want to make sure that your wishes are carried through and that your children are taken care of…right?

Well, then you will want to head over to KidsProtectionPlan.com ASAP and take 10 minutes to create an easy-to-fill-out document that states who should get custody of your children should anything happen to you.  This isn’t just about if you die, but what if you were in the hospital for some time, who would take care of your children?  Be prepared!

I did this super simple process the other day and was amazed at how easy creator and attorney Alexis Martin Neely, makes it for parents to have a sound plan in place.  Alexis walks you through the process via video and with clearly written instructions. After 10 minutes I had a document all ready to print out and sign in front of witnesses and now my children and their well being, should anything happen to me, are covered!  Head on over to http://kidsprotectionplan.com/ to get yourself covered too! Thanks Alexis!

GO NOW!

Takes 10 minutes and is more important than any accessory, dress or lip color that you are contemplating on taking to blogher (and I know you’ve spent more than ten minutes thinking about that stuff, ladies! Me too ;) ).

P.S. Alexis is sending me to Blogher with 10 copies of her book, “Wear Clean Underwear: A Fast, Fun, Friendly (and essential) Guide to Legal Planning for Busy Parents”.  Be sure to come and find me for your copy!! Thank you Alexis!!
